Brazilian paper adding
2nd UV tower to existing MDGM pressline

Brazilian
newspaper publisher Diarios do Para Ltd. is adding a second four-high tower from
Manugraph DGM Inc. to bolster its newspaper and commercial production.
The tower, equipped with a UV
curing system from Prime UV Systems, will bring to two the number of UV systems
in operation at Belem-based Diarios do Para, said Camilo Centeno, general
director.
The publisher is the only
newspaper printer in Brazil able to offer UV printing on a coldset press.

In addition to flagship daily
Diarios do Para (daily, 32,000; Sunday, 37,000), the publisher produces a broad
range of commercial work, printing on a variety of substrates, from newsprint to
coated paper.
The daily paper is produced in
seven sections, five broadsheet and two tabloid.
When the new tower goes into
production early this year, Diarios do Para will have a pressline consisting of
four MDGM 430 towers (two with UV curing). The existing three-tower press is
equipped with a 1035 folder with upper former and three Jardis splicers.
Any kind of substrate
The new tower, which will
enable Diarios do Para to boost its color capacity, will sport a Motterstitch
Co. stitcher and a fourth Jardis splicer, Centeno said. The buttressed pressline
will give the publisher the capacity of eight broadsheet pages of UV production,
according to MDGM.
“Currently, we are the only
Brazilian newspaper that has a UV system working and as soon as MDGM delivers
our new tower with the new UV system, we will have two towers able to print any
kind of paper using UV ink,” Centeno said.
Centeno said he expects the
new tower to give the publisher an additional boost in market penetration. The
first UV towers sparked a revenue increase of about 10 percent.
“Before we purchased the tower
with UV, we were a newspaper with only a 4 percent market share, and now we are
on top with a 66 percent market share.
“Our growth occurred after
investments in print quality, changes to editorial and additional human
resources. But we consider the print quality to be fundamental to our five years
of continuous increase in circulation.”
Centeno said the move to add a
fourth MDGM tower was fueled by the vendor’s technology and its commitment to
service. “During the past five years, issues were taken care of quickly and
cleanly, and that is very important to us since our company is many thousands of
miles away from MDGM’s headquarters.”
