NYDN to add daily inserting with Ferag

By Chuck Moozakis
Editor-In-Chief

The (New York) Daily News will begin inserting preprints and other marketing materials into its daily editions next year following the purchase of postproduction equipment from Ferag.

The paper will install six MultiSertDrum inserting lines with associated RollStream, gripper conveyor and DiscPool buffering systems for the continuous winding and unwinding of newspaper copies.

Huge benefit

Inserted newspapers will be conveyed by UTR gripper conveyors to existing bundle-packaging lines. The system will be controlled by a Ferag integrated process control system.

The first two lines will be installed by the fourth quarter of 2008 with the remaining lines in operation by July 2009. All of the equipment will be placed at the Daily News’ Jersey City, N.J., production facility.

“The Daily News worked with Ferag and Goss, its North American sales partner, to develop a system that would specifically meet the needs of our readers and advertisers,” said Marc Kramer, chief executive officer of the Daily News. “Our readers and advertisers will now enjoy the benefits of daily insertions.”

“Daily inserting will provide a huge benefit to our clients,” said John Polizano, senior vice president of advertising. “The new Ferag equipment will provide advertisers with greater flexibility to be creative with their advertising inserts as well as the ability to better target consumers in various parts of the New York market any day of the week.”

Joe Colletti, president and chief executive officer of WRH Marketing America’s, Ferag’s U.S. marketing arm, said the firm is “thrilled to provide the Daily News with our conveying, buffering and inserting equipment.”

Sunday inserting of the Daily News is handled by a third-party vendor.

The Daily News agreement comes on the heels of November’s announcement that Ferag and Goss will be supplying postpress equipment to Transcontinental Inc. for its forthcoming newspaper production plant in Fremont, Calif.

Ferag is overseeing installation of the equipment, which includes three UTR press gripper conveyors, five DiscPool buffering systems, five MultiSert inserting drums with RollStream (12:1 capacity), 40 JetFeeders, 10 MultiStack stackers and 20 SmartStrap strappers.

Goss is supplying two 30:2 Magnapak inserters.
