Tribune unit touts sports widgets as key for papers

By Marcelo Duran

Tribune Media Services is churning out widgets aimed at helping newspaper Web sites improve their sports, entertainment and other niche content.

In September, TMS beefed up its lineup of sports widgets to include ones aimed at all local major professional and college teams located in a customer’s particular region. Papers then customize the widget with information including television broadcast times and channels, said Greg Loose, TMS’ director of product development.

Widgets, essentially shortcuts, give users immediate access to content generated from other sites.

The sports widgets follow TMS’ baseball widget, introduced earlier this spring. All the widgets are created with software from NewsGator Technologies.

“We are allowing our customers to offer different flavors of widgets,” Loose  said “What we’ve done so far is launch two versions’ a multisport widget and a single sport widget.”

The multisport widget focuses on nine major college and professional team sports and includes two-week game schedules and broadcast times. The single-game widget focuses on one sport and can feature up to six teams. The single sport widget also allows newspapers to integrate their content into the widget via RSS.
