Larry Charest
Production Director
Denver Newspaper Agency,
publisher of The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News
7 years in current position
30 years in the industry |
What was your first job in the newspaper business?
I was a paperboy for The
Detroit News as a kid. My first real job was a flyboy (pre-apprentice) at
Detroit Newspapers.
What do you like most
about your job?
I like planning and executing
new procedures and processes. It is rewarding when a plan comes together.
What do you like least?
The last two years have been a
lot of hours due to the press and postpress upgrade project and consolidation of
our plants. When you work that many hours it becomes the least favorite part of
the job.
What was Denver Newspaper
Agency’s most recent purchase/installation?
Our most recent purchases were
five MAN Roland GeoMAN presses, five Kodak Trendsetter News computer-to-plate
units, along with Nela benders and conveyors. We also purchased two Goss
Magnapack inserters, two Goss 642 inserters and an automatic storage and
retrieval system from HK Systems.
All of these purchases were
made to combine all of our production into one plant. That has been achieved. We
closed our second plant last October.
What is the biggest
challenge the Denver Newspaper Agency is facing in production?
Being able to bring in more
business. We are trying to bring in commercial work and fit it into our current
press schedules. This becomes a real balancing act. Keeping the quality up and
the waste down is a never-ending task.
What trend are you keeping
your eye on?
I am keeping an eye on
web-width reductions, and how other newspapers are transitioning into media
companies. Some newspapers are going toward the Web, while others are expanding
the printing capabilities to attract commercial work. Outsourcing is also
something I watch with interest.
