QuadTech said it purchased Vigitek, a Limerick, Ireland, developer of print inspection technology. QuadTech said it will incorporate Vigitek’s print defect detection software within its line of automatic register guidance systems.

QuadTech said Vigitek will operate as a subsidiary and will function as its own entity.

No financial details were disclosed.

Meantime, QuadTech said it is reselling the Prism QTMS production management system.

Quipp said it sold a third insert management control system to El Tiempo in Colombia. The Newscom 6 app will be installed in the paper’s existing inserter. It also sold a Viper wrapper to the Wenatchee (Wash.) World and a bundle turner to the Evansville (Ind.) Courier & Press.

The PrintCity Alliance released its Value Added Printing of Newspapers Resource Book, detailing results of the group’s VAPoN study that concluded this year.

PrintCity members MAN Roland, Sun Chemical, UPM, Megtec, Eltex, MacDermid and Oce participated in the VAPoN study, which began in 2006. The research examined economic, production and operational factors involved in value-added newspaper production, including the use of specialty inks and paper.

Tribune Co.’s free daily newspaper RedEye is using software from ReadOz to permit readers to access digital editions of the paper on their mobile devices. Meantime, RedEye celebrated the first anniversary of its weekend edition, with 100,000 opt-in subscribers.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel began printing La Raza under terms of a three-year agreement. The newspaper expects to print 200,000 copies of the paper each week with average publication sizes ranging between 48 and 92 pages. Contract terms weren’t disclosed.
