What was your first job in
the newspaper business?
An apprentice printer.
What do you like most
about your job?
Variation, and a good team of
managers under my direction.
What do you like least?
There are no negatives at
present. I would always like more capital for more upgrading, but it’s not
always available.
What was APN News and
Media’s most recent purchase/installation?
A six-tower Manugraph
shaftless press at each of our Toowoomba and Ballina sites. Toowoomba had all
products live on the new press in May and Ballina will have all products live in
September.
We have a good history with
Manugraph. The press in Ballina is the last of four similar lines that have been
commissioned in 2007 and 2008 (at APN’s sites in Rockhampton, Bundaberg and
Toowoomba).
What is the biggest
challenge APN News and Media is facing in production?
In Australia there is a drive
towards heatset or similar finish. This is moving product away from the
traditional coldset newspaper.
It is a challenge to find
alternatives to normal heatset that will satisfy the market without having to
bring in new presses. UV and electronic beam are some options that can be
retrofit to existing good equipment.
What trend are you keeping
your eye on?
I guess the answer is the same
as above. I’m also looking at the long-term trend of dwindling readership
amongst younger generations and the ramifications to our traditional newspaper
business.
