The New
York Times is putting the finishing touches on postpress upgrades underpinning
its College Point, N.Y., print site.
The paper last month was in
the process of commissioning six palletizing systems from Schur Packaging
Systems Inc., said Nick D’Andrea, executive director of production.
The Winrob III systems, in
conjunction with six PSW stretch wrappers, are being used to shuttle completed
newspaper bundles generated from five tie-lines and The Times’ existing
tilt-tray system. The machines, along with new conveyors and mailroom management
software from Schur, HK Systems Inc. and other vendors, allow the newspaper to
place all of its material handling on a single platform, D’Andrea said.
