Don’t stumble on your path to going green
A variety of options exist for newspapers assessing their environmental strategies, but be careful which direction you pursue.

The world is going green — publishers, employees, suppliers, vendors and, of course, readers. Regardless of opinions on climate change, everyone wants to conserve natural resources and increase energy independence. Newspapers also naturally want everyone to know about their efforts.

The ways to go green seem endless, and most are beneficial. But when you begin to walk down that green path, be sure you get the most green for your dollar. More than ever, the newspaper industry requires smart financial choices. Green programs are no exception. Commitments to green programs by newspapers are very public and subject to intense scrutiny, making the choices all the more important.

Green facilities commitments can take several forms:

•Corporate sustainability reports

•Energy savings programs

•LEED certification programs
