Nexpo vendors ready to unveil products, services
Exhibitor numbers at this year’s Nexpo may be down a bit, but vendors still plan to woo buyers with a wide variety of new technologies. Here’s an early taste of what to expect in Washington.

 

ABB touting Cockpit software

ABB will display its full line of integrated workflow software, including MPS Cockpit, an application that provides newspapers oversight of their entire production operations.

Additionally, the vendor will have information about its press control and drive replacement and refurbishment services.

ACCHSH displaying upgraded app

ACCHSH is introducing the newest version of its ad management software. The software, PuzzleFlow Newspaper Automater, automates the production of ads, from preflight to trapping and page pairing, the company said. The company also plans to talk about a new Web-based ad management app that will make its debut at drupa.

APT showing contest app

Advanced Publishing Technology is launching its EZ$Contests software, which allows newspapers to broaden their print-only contests to their online editions.

AlfaQuest FasTrak gains speed

AlfaQuest Technologies is showing a new 225 plate-per-hour FasTrak violet platesetter, as well as new developments to its PrintExpress software that include a  browser-based interface and press manager.

The vendor is also debuting a new content management app called MediaSuite.

AlfaQuest also signed an agreement with Fusion Systems International to sell FSI’s CTP workflow software packaged with its LaserBus technology for driving FasTrak and NewsXpress platesetters — called alfa CTP Workflow.

Aragon to debut 2 control apps

Aragon System Products said it is introducing new labeling system and bundle management software. The Aspect Labeler Interface, ALI-500, is an entry-level system that links label applicators to a stacker via direct I/O. The Aspect Bundling Module, ABM-500 gives newspapers better control of their bundle management, ASP said.

ATS intros sports publishing

Advanced Technical Solutions is taking community journalism to the sporting world by partnering with Community Pro. Community Pro allows users to generate sports content online and reverse publishes for the community.

Users can post stories, stats and photos from sporting events. The new features are designed to facilitate all community journalism content and advertising online and in printed niche products.

Cannon integrating equipment with app

Cannon Equipment has retooled its Comet software to support its entire product line, from stackers to cart loaders, the company said.

CCI debuting integrated NewsGate

CCI Europe released the latest version of CCI NewsGate, now with Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy workflow integration. New enhancements include two-way integration with online publishing systems, support for Mac OS X workstations, and TV integration to AP/ENPS. CCI will demonstrate NewsGate’s new functionalities, and its AdDesk advertising solution, at Nexpo.

EidosMedia rolling out portal app

EidosMedia is showcasing Methode Portal Server, a Web content management app that allows users to manage the creation and distribution of online news and information. Eidos will have one-and-a-half-hour presentations of its Methode software in the Nexpo Learning Lab (booth 440) on Saturday, April 12 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Sunday April 13 at 10:30 a.m., and Monday April 14 at 10:30 a.m. Register by contacting sheri.jones@eidosmedia.com.

EPG shows color apps

Essex Products Group will feature KeyColor AutoPage and AutoSet software on a KeyColor C remote ink desk. KeyColor AutoPage software simplifies the newspaper printer’s setup and color correction, the vendor said. With AutoPage, page locations are displayed on the operator screen and operators need only touch the page number and the color that they wish to adjust and the systems will access the corresponding fountain. AutoPage also allows multiple jobs to be run simultaneously on different sections of the press, allowing operators to select any page from any job for adjustment.

KeyColor AutoSet presetting software converts digital data from a CTP system in the prepress department to preset all ink keys accurately.

Express KCS kicking off edit, spec ads

Express KCS is rolling out new outsourcing services aimed at spec ads and editorial layout, including copy-editing. The San Jose, Calif.-based company has operations in Gurgeon, India, and already performs ad production for a number of papers, including the San Jose Mercury News and (Minneapolis) Star Tribune.

EAE touting control upgrades

EAE will provide Nexpo visitors with information on how to improve operations through press and mailroom control upgrades.

Products on display include EAE’s Press Control Console with a new widescreen display and the vendor’s fault-tolerant press control upgrade with enhanced maintenance support. EAE will also demonstrate its full line of products and services at drupa later this year.

FMC rolling out new AGVs

FMC Technologies Inc. is releasing two new AGVs for newspaper postproduction. The first vehicle, for pallet handling, is engineered to automatically store and retrieve pallets of inserts from racking and deliver them as needed. The second, a trailer loader, automatically loads bundled newspapers and other materials to standard, over-the-road trailers.

HK Systems upgrades apps

HK Systems Inc. released an upgraded version of its Material Tracking and Control software designed to help newspapers better manage FSIs. The software meshes with management control apps from a number of vendors, including Burt Technologies Inc., Goss International Corp. and Muller Martini Mailroom Systems Inc.

Kodak has new platesetter

Kodak will roll out a new version of its Trendsetter News thermal computer-to-plate system at Nexpo. It will also have information about its other CTP systems and workflow software.

Manugraph DGM Inc. is introducing the Frontline press, a one-around singlewide press that has a capacity of 60,000 copies per hour. The shaftless press, of H-unit design, is fully beared and includes spraybars and catwalks on the second and third level as standard equipment. It also has web severers on the incoming and outgoing side of the towers and features touch-screen controls and auto-plate positioning. MDGM is also showcasing the 1270 combination jaw folder, which has a capacity of 70,000 copies per hour.

Masthead touts 6-wide service                Masthead International is introducing a press modification service that lets newspapers print six pages across on a doublewide press. The service, Metro Saver, can be performed on 66-inch-wide Goss International Corp. Metro presses. The service includes modifications on the press’ RTPs, inkers, folders, rails, spraybars, lockups and blankets.

MediaSpan upgrades apps

MediaSpan at Nexpo will debut YouNews, a moderated user-generated video tool that helps newspapers manage and edit user-generated video.

MediaSpan will also introduce its latest iterations of its IQue editorial app, CirculationPro circ app, ProductionManagerPro and Jazbox apps.

Meantime, the vendor will announce several new deals, including deployments at The (Bridgeport) Connecticut Post, Heartland Publications and GateHouse Media.

MediaSpan will also unveil partnerships with Verve Wireless to provide customers with integrated content management and mobile marketing options; and with StreamAudio to provide audio streaming services, ad replacement tools and royalty fee management.

Finally, MediaSpan will host IBM at its booth, which will be promoting its IDS database on Apple’s Macintosh OS X.

Megtec showing new dryer, splicer

Megtec will show its new Dual-Dry RTO dryer with integrated oxidizer, which the vendor said lowers gas consumption and emissions up to 50 percent. It will also show its new match-speed splicer, the DLC 6000, developed for 80-page presses with web widths up to 95 inches.

With a capacity of more than 6 tons, the DLC 6000 touts the highest roll weight capacity in web offset printing. Finally, Megtec will show its new MP12, MP14, MP22 and MP24 core-driven flying pasters. The line’s compact design and low height are suited for printers with limited space requirements, Megtec said.

 Miles 33 has new content app

Miles 33 is debuting Workflow, a media-neutral content creation and management app that let users schedule, assign and track content slated for both print and electronic distribution.

MMMS to debut inserter

Muller Martini Mailroom Systems Inc. is rolling out to the U.S. market its ProLiner inserting system. The modular system, capable of processing up to 45,000 copies per hour, had its international debut last June at the Newstech show in the United Kingdom.

The expandable ProLiner will complement MMMS’ existing AlphaLiner, NewsLiner and SLS inserting systems.

NewsNotes going green

NewsNotes Advertising is introducing a recyclable adhesive on its note products. The RCA breaks down in large particles that can be trapped in screens and removed for disposal or incineration. The RCA joins NewsNotes’ existing repulbable adhesive notes. Additionally, NewsNotes is debuting NewsNotes Library, allowing ad sales reps to take samples of notes to prospective clients.

OneVision intros photo app

OneVision will roll out Amendo, a new image management application. The software automatically adjusts color, tone and size of images, and can be used in conjunction with a browser-based front-end that permits remote management.

The app has been engineered to adjust individual elements of the image as needed, thus reducing the time needed to color-correct photos, the company said.

In addition to Amendo, OneVision will demonstrate its other prepress applications.

ProImage to debut ‘green’ software

ProImage is introducing OnColor Eco ink optimization software, aimed at helping newspapers reduce ink consumption. The app automatically analyzes PDF files and determines the exact amount of ink needed to produce the best possible output, ProImage said.

Q.I. Press Controls touting automation

Q.I. Press Controls said it will present a platform for automation of the press this year at Nexpo.

The vendor will also demo its new Air Bustle Device, which allows closed-loop fanout control with minimal air consumption; its Intelligent Density System for closed-loop color control; its Intelligent Register Control app; and its IQM management information app.

Q.I. will also show its IDS  markless color control app, designed to provide consistent quality color reproduction, regardless of press, location and other variables during the printing process.

Quipp upgrades Packman

Quipp Systems Inc. will demonstrate its upgraded Packman II packaging system, now equipped with a Signode strapping module.

Quipp said the module uses a 5mm-wide embossed polypropylene strapping material and features 40 percent fewer moving parts than rival strapper models.

Two papers, the Chicago Sun-Times and Asheville (N.C.) Citizen Times, have already purchased the upgraded units.

Quipp will also demonstrate its Newscom 6 inserter software, its other postpress equipment and show videos of recent installations.

Rima has new stacker

Rima-System is showing a new version of the RS 36 Compensating Counter Stacker, which includes servomotors in the upper bin as well as in the pusher in the bucket. The combination of servo forks and servo pusher allows for high-quality bundles even on 4- and 8-page tabs, as well as on fold work. Because of its servo technology approach, there is virtually no dropped product from the upper to lower bin, thereby minimizing rejogging finished editions, Rima said.

SCS touting new ad app

Software Consulting Services is introducing a new suite of ad management applications, called AdBoss. The software includes ColorAdBoss, an advertising department-oriented color availability module; ReserveAdBoss, which funnels information from an order entry system to SCS’ Layout-8000 software; Standby AdBoss, an ad remnant sales app; and AdReason, an analytics tool. It’s also rolling out Community Advertising Services, self-service classified software that’s integrated with SCS’ AdMax app.

SCS will also display an upgrade to Layout-8000. Version 11 includes new report presentations, XML interfaces and a beefed-up user interface. The Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., and The Express-Times in Easton, Pa., are among papers testing the software.

Smith RPM debuting reg systems

Smith RPM is introducing its new Oden automatic color and cutoff registration systems. The technology is developed specifically for newspaper presses, the firm said.

Stepper has new stuffer

Stepper Inc. is introducing its Big Stuff feeder, based on a vacuum tube feed technology that enables it to feed a wider variety of products.

The feeder can be used in both offline and inline operations and can handle pre-inserted advance sections, completes and TMCs that other vacuum feeders can’t process, Stepper said. Existing Stepper Sunday inserting systems can be retrofitted with the new vacuum technology to improve their capabilities.

Tera debuting Web app

Tera Digital Publishing will introduce the Web content management portion of its GN3 software, which the vendor said is content-neutral, and allows users to accept copy from a variety of sources including the Web. The name of the new app will be unveiled at the show.

Users of Tera’s GN3 editorial app already had the ability to edit content independent of its destination, and will now be able to publish content on the Web as well, the vendor said.

The app features article-based content management, which allows publishers to define an article structure as part of system configuration, rather than through customization.

Users can specify a destination for content — for example, a headline, as being for a particular Web site, Web site section, print title or section, or any combination of sections and media.

The app includes modules for forums, blogs, image galleries, online forms, polling, reader contribution support and geomapping.

US Ink showing UV, scented inks

US Ink is showcasing a number of products at Nexpo, including its UV ink, Overprint Varnish for improved coldset web offset printing and micro-encapsulated scented ink. In addition, the vendor is displaying its Spectra LS Ink System; its USEIT online press simulator training program and will have on hand information about the latest enhancements to the Specifications for Newsprint Advertising Production standard.
