U.S. senators offer
Goss aid in trade dispute with Japanese supplier
New Hampshire’s U.S. senators
last month met with United States Trade Representative Susan C. Schwab in an
effort to help Goss International Corp. resolve the continuing trade dispute
with Tokyo Kikai Seisakusho (TKS).
Republican Senators John
Sununu and Judd Gregg convened the meeting.
Although Goss was awarded more
than $35 million after TKS was found guilty of selling presses at below-market
rates, Japanese “claw back” legislation could force Goss’ Japanese unit to pay
back the judgment.
“Goss and its 1,000 New
Hampshire employees deserve help from the U.S. government as the company fights
for a fair conclusion to this dispute with TKS,” Sununu said in a statement.
“Goss’ Japanese unit faces retaliatory action from the Japanese government that
is clearly a violation of international trading standards.”
Bob Brown, Goss’ president and
chief executive officer, praised the senators’ involvement. “They have both been
key in assisting Goss,” he said in a statement.
Meantime, Goss last month
filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to review the decision by the 8th
Circuit Court of Appeals which lifted the restriction barring TKS from taking
steps to recoup the original judgment.
