Mo., Ky., dailies tap CTP Alliance for prepress
Screen, SLP, Presteligence and Polkadots products implemented by pubs.

The Daily American Republic of Poplar Bluff, Mo., implemented an integrated digital workflow including associated hardware and software from the CTP Alliance.

The company chose a Screen PlateRite News 2000 thermal computer-to-plate imager and a Southern Lithotech Protek 105 processor, along with Presteligence’s NewsXtreme workflow software and Southern Lithoplate’s Viper 830 lithoplates. A Nela inline punch bender was installed in August.

The Daily American Republic prints its flagship six days a week, as well as two smaller sister papers, the weekly Prospect-News and Puxico Press. It also prints inserts, handbills and other projects for area businesses.

Insta Print, a commercial sheetfed division housed in the century-old Daily American Republic building, produces letterheads, envelopes, yearbooks and magazines.

“Being able to merge prepress production for our newspaper and commercial printing was a key factor in choosing a CTP device,” said Randy Graves, production manager. “We tested the Viper plates on the Screen platesetter for both the web and sheetfed presses. They worked great. We have done runs of 200,000, and have had no problems with plates keeping up with the press speeds.”

Meantime, The Advocate-Messenger of Danville, Ky., implemented CTP through the CTP Alliance. The newspaper installed Southern Litho’s Viper 830 plates, Screen’s PlateRite News 2000S thermal platesetter, Polkadots Software’s Newsflo Lite PDF workflow management application and the Nela HAO semiautomatic plate bender.

In addition to its daily, the paper prints The Interior Journal and The Jessamine Journal, two weeklies serving nearby communities.
