Trinity Mirror buys MAN, WIFAG presses

N&T Staff Report

U.K. newspaper printer Trinity Mirror is buying presses from MAN Roland and WIFAG for its plants in Watford and Oldham, England, respectively.

Four-tower design

The move comes after Trinity Mirror signed a 12-year agreement with Independent News & Media to print and distribute The Independent. The new presses will give Trinity Mirror the capacity to print color on every page.

MAN Roland is installing a four-tower, one-folder ColorMAN press in Watford while WIFAG is providing a four-tower, one-folder evolution 371 press in Oldham. Both presses are expected to be in production in August 2008.

The machines will be joined by postproduction equipment from Ferag.

Trinity Mirror last month said it would invest $45 million to upgrade its facilities as a result of the renewal of its printing contract with INM.

The Watford ColorMAN will bring to six the number of ColorMAN presses Trinity Mirror is running at the production facility. In 2005, Trinity picked MAN Roland to install five ColorMAN machines, consisting of a total of 16 printing towers, 16 reelstands and five folders.

Replacing older machines

The presses, equipped with semi-automated plate loading and soft proofing, are replacing 12 older ColorMAN machines now used to print the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and more than 100 other publications.
