Swift’s Colo. plant live with UV towers on 2 presses

GYPSUM, Colo. — Swift Communications’ Colorado Mountain News Media on June 4 went live with two UV-equipped press towers.

“We went live today and I intend to keep running seven days a week,” said Alan Hawk, production area manager.

CMNM prints a number of Swift papers on Colorado’s Western slope including the Glenwood Springs Post-Independent, Summit Daily News, the Aspen Times, Vail Daily, the Grand Junction Free Press and nine additional weeklies, including the Eagle Valley Enterprise. CMNM also prints a number of commercial jobs to the tune of 20 to 30 commercial runs each week.

Colorado Mountain News Media began testing two new
UV towers from Prime UV in April and went live with the towers last month.

CMNM’s No. 1 and No. 2 Manugraph DGM 440 towers are now dedicated to UV following testing that began in early April. Test products included the Aspen Dining Guide, Fizbo and Grand Junction Show Place.

“We will run the top two webs of all our jobs on UV,” Hawk said. “It’s more beneficial to run the UV all the time because there is less clean up.”

In addition to giving CMNM the ability to run glossy paper, Hawk said the additional towers were a major selling point for CMNM, which is an all-MDGM shop.

“(We’ll get) increased page capacity and less runs on our core products,” Hawk said. “The other added bonuses are less setoff and the fact that the belts on our equipment will stay clean, with less marking.”

CMNM is using UV curing systems from Prime UV, which has also equipped other MDGM presslines in use by Dominion Enterprises (formerly Trader Publishing).

Meantime, Hawk said Swift acquired some additional newspapers in Grand County, Colo., including the Winter Park Manifest, the Sky-Hi News in Granby, the Middle Park Times in Kremmling, the Grand Lake Prospector, the Daily Tribune and four weeklies.
