Schurz Communications Inc.
last month said it would reduce the web widths of its 10 newspapers to 46
inches.
Charles V. Pittman, senior
vice president of publishing at the company, said three papers, the Petoskey
(Mich.) News-Review; the Advocate-Messenger in Danville, Ky.; and the Winchester
(Ky.) Sun will trim their webs within the next 90 days, using Schurz crews.
Later in the year, web widths
will be reduced at the Aberdeen (S.D.) American News; the Bedford (Ind.)
Times-Mail; the Imperial Valley Press in El Centro, Calif.; and the Noblesville
(Ind.) Daily Times.
A third group of papers, the
South Bend (Ind.) Tribune, the Herald-Mail in Hagerstown, Md., and the
Herald-Times in Bloomington, Ind., will follow thereafter, Pittman said.
The papers are printed on a
mix of singlewide and doublewide presses. Two of the papers, the Herald-Mail and
Herald-Times, also are equipped with 50-inch Americolor towers. Pittman said
Schurz hasn’t yet selected a contractor to handle the web reductions for its
larger papers.
