Goss sells postpress units to 3 papers

ORLANDO, Fla. – Goss International Corp. sold postpress control software to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a second Magnapak inserter to the Roanoke (Va.) Times and two Magnapaks and associated Ferag postpress equipment to the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman, the vendor said.

At the Review-Journal, Goss is installing Omnizone supervisory software and equipping four existing NP-630 inserters with Omnicon and downstream control technology.

Packaging Manager Mike Riordon said the new software will help the paper better integrate its postpress operations.

“Our current systems have run exceptionally well for seven years, but we are quickly approaching the limitations of what the software can do,” he said.

The paper currently processes some 12 million preprinted inserts each week.

The Times purchased a 32-station, dual delivery Magnapak that will be used for Sunday and daily insertion. It will join an existing Magnapak the paper installed in 2002. The new machine will be in production this summer, Goss said.

Goss will update the existing Magnapak to mirror the latest software in the new one, said Grace Abbott, packaging manager and Lucas Turning, packaging operations manager.

The American-Statesman, meantime, is adding two Magnapak packaging systems in addition to Ferag UTR press grippers and MultiDisc storage systems in a project to be completed next year.

The new packaging configuration will use five Ferag press grippers to carry products from the presses to five winding systems. The direct-to-pocket technology will allow products to be fed from the unwinders to four positions on each of the two inserters, according to Doug Gibson, Goss’ vice president.

Each Magnapak will be configured with 38 stations and equipped for single or dual delivery. The machines will also feature Omnicon control software.

As part of its postpress upgrade, the American-Statesman also tapped Schur Packaging Systems Inc. to install six Winrob II palletizing systems and two TLBC bundle distribution systems.
