The New York Times last month
launched mobile.nytimes.com, which lets users download news and information via
Web enabled phones, PDAs and other devices.
The service is available free
of charge.
“The NYTimes.com mobile site
reinforces our commitment to offer readers the high-quality journalism of The
New York Times across all platforms,” said Vivian Schiller, senior vice
president and general manager, NYTimes.com.
“We will continue to take
advantage of all digital technology to provide our readers with Times journalism
where, when and how they want it.”
The Times developed the site
with Starcut USA Inc. Users can access the ad-supported site regardless of the
carrier they might use, The Times said.
The paper said it plans to add
more features to the mobile site, including weather, stock prices, sports scores
and move showtimes.
The Philadelphia Inquirer,
meantime, launched Inquirer Sports Extra, a wireless service containing sports
news and information. The service, free for the first two months, will be priced
at 99 cents per month for existing newspaper subscribers, according to the
paper.
