N.H., international publishers tap Atex

Foster’s Daily Democrat of Dover, N.H., and the Citizen of Laconia, N.H., installed Atex’s World Class Series Circulation app for Microsoft Windows.

The upgrade moves the George J. Foster Co.-owned dailies and four additional weeklies onto a more robust platform, Atex said, while maintaining existing functionality and adding new tools and services.

Outdated system

“We were able to get rid of our outdated VAX hardware,” said Simeon Broughton, information systems manager for Foster. “[And] by moving to the Windows and SQL platforms, we have a variety of new tools available to us, particularly vastly improved reporting capabilities and an open, easily accessible database.”

Meantime, the Brunei Times in Brunei Darussalam, Southeast Asia, tapped Atex for software to support all of the daily’s print, Web and SMS editions.

The project was completed in four weeks.

“We placed an unusual burden on Atex, to deliver - within four weeks - the systems, and to find us a core of production editing talent to get the show on the road,” said Brunei Times’ project consultant Cyril Pereira, who formerly served as operations director of The South China Morning Post. “They packaged the system and the team to deliver the launch.”

Czech upgrade

Elsewhere, Czech Republic media organization MAFRA went live with 170 seats of Atex’s Czech-language advertising app to manage all of its media interests.

Based in Prague, MAFRA publishes six weekly and 14 regional editions of Mlada Fronta DNES with a total circulation of approximately 310,000. The Atex app, which includes contract management, integrated accounts receivable, page planning and production, is also being used to manage ad sales for sister publication Lidove Noviny, with a daily circ of 75,000, as well as ad sales for MAFRA’s Internet, radio and television interests.

Integrated software

Atex integrated the ad software with MAFRA’s existing apps, including a Unisys Hermes editorial system.

Finally, Sinar Harian, the new compact-sized newspaper published by Kumpulan Karangkraf Sdn Bhd - which is produced with Atex’s editorial and digital asset management apps - said it is in live production in the northeastern Malaysian states of Kelantan and Terengganu.
