LA Times augments postpress

The Los Angeles Times tapped GMA Inc. and Schur Packaging Systems Inc. to enhance its Irwindale, Calif., postpress and distribution facility.

California Community News will install two GMA 16:2 SLS-3000 inserters, four CombiStack bundle building machines and 10 automatic hopper loaders.

In addition, GMA will expand four of CCN's existing SLS-2000 inserters with extra insert positions to handle increased production loads.

"Our existing GMA systems have worked extremely well," said Russ Newton, CCN's director of operations. "GMA was the logical choice when it came to expanding our operation."

Meantime, CCN is adding two Winrob II palletizers and PSW pallet stretch wrappers from Schur, adding the devices to nine other Winrob palletizers now in operation at the facility.

CCN creates more than 7 million inserted packages each week for the Times.
