Agfa Graphics named Ruben Silva regional sales manager for the Eastern Canada region.

 

Punch Graphix named Patrick Canavan president and chief executive officer of its North American operations, succeeding Kristof Vereenooghe.

 

PRESS

Patrick H. Avery was named director of sales and marketing at QuadTech Inc. Prior to joining QuadTech, Avery worked at Cooper Power Systems and ABB.

 

POSTPRESS

Sitma U.S.A. Inc. named Bob Barton commercial operations director. He succeeds Pete Butikis, who resigned from the postpress vendor.

 

INDUSTRY

Frank “Butch” Hughes III was named president and general manager of the Anderson (S.C.) Independent Mail.

 

Samuel P. Martin was named chief advertising officer of Boston Globe Media.

 

Columbia University announced that Paul E. Steiger, managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and a vice president at Dow Jones & Co., was appointed as the new chairman of the Pulitzer Prize Board. Steiger, who has been a board member since 1998, replaces Harvard University professor Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr.

 

Tom Travis was named vice president of production at The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky. He formerly served as director of operations at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tenn.

 

The Denver Newspaper Agency named Harry Whipple president, succeeding Kirk MacDonald, who resigned to launch his own business. Whipple formerly served as president of Newspaper Agency Corp. in Salt Lake City, which publishes The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret Morning News. Brent J. Low, president and publisher of The Spectrum in St. George, Utah, was named to replace Whipple as head of NAC.

 






The Hartford (Conn.) Courant named Nancy A. Meyer vice president of advertising.

 





Journal Communications Inc. named Elizabeth Brenner executive vice president and president and chief operating officer of the firm’s publishing division, which includes the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. She succeeds Scott McElhaney, who left the company. Meantime, JCI named David Honan general manager of its Journal Community Publishing Group unit.

Journal Register Co. announced that Jean B. Clifton is resigning as president, chief operating officer and director, effective June 30. Edward S. Condra was promoted to senior vice president of operations and will assume Clifton’s operating duties.

 

Knight Ridder named Ann Caulkins publisher of The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, succeeding Peter Ridder, who is retiring. Caulkins, who formerly served as president and publisher of The (Columbia, S.C.) State, will be replaced by Henry Haitz.

 

The New York Times named Alexis Buryk to senior vice president of advertising. The New York Times Co. also named Susan Telesmanic vice president of consumer marketing; promoted Virginia French to group vice president for advertising; and named Seth Rogin and Andy Wright vice presidents for advertising sales.

 

The PAGE Co-op named Steve Schroeder assistant general manager and director of technical services.

 

Sherman Bodner was named president and publisher of The Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton, N.Y., succeeding Bernie Griffin, who was named chairman.

 

Tribune Publishing appointed Doug Thomas vice president of advertising.

 

Kevin D. Mowbray was named publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, succeeding Terrance C.Z. Egger, who joined The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer as publisher.
