Publishers transitioning to thermal

Phoenix Newspapers Inc. said it ordered five Kodak Trendsetter News thermal computer-to-plate units for production of its flagship The Arizona Republic as well as The New York Times at its Deer Valley and Mesa locations (see related story, page 10). The Gannett-owned newspaper chose four Trendsetter News 200 units and one Trendsetter News 100, which will all run Kodak’s ThermalNews plates using four PL-T plateloaders from Nela.

Metroland Printing, Publishing & Distributing of Mississauga, Ontario, also tapped Kodak, opting for one Trendsetter News 150 and Kodak’s thermal digital plates for production of publications including The Mississauga News. The publisher will also load plates with a PL-T unit from Nela. In total, Metroland prints 100 community newspapers.

Brehm Communications, based in San Diego, meantime, will begin installation of a Trendsetter News 50 and the Prinergy Evo workflow app at its Hi-Desert Publishing site in Yucca Valley, Calif., Kodak said. This is the third Trendsetter for the publisher, which has more than 50 daily, weekly and semi-weekly newspapers, and also operates a Trendsetter News 100 and Trendsetter News 70.

In addition, McNaughton Newspapers in northern California purchased a Trendsetter News 70 for production of The Daily Republic in Fairfield and a Trendsetter News 50 for production of the Davis Enterprise in Davis. Both sites will also install Prinergy Evo workflow servers, Kodak said. McNaughton Newspapers also publishes the Mountain Democrat, Life Newspapers and the Winters Express in northern California.
