Group M Inc. promoted Jeff Lewis to vice president of public relations and Joel Samberg to senior writer/consultant. The company also hired Melissa Fisher and Rockfeler Gue.

Mike Gold stepped down from his role as chairman of CNI Corp. effective immediately. Gold founded CNI in 1988 and was a part owner and president until 2000 when Jon Dickinson purchased his shares and assumed the role of president.

Dan Kemper was named president of Schur Packaging Systems Inc. Kemper was formerly director of sales at the firm, which opened its U.S. sales office in 2003.

 




The Kennedy Group hired Jeff Deitz as vice president of business development for the Promotional Response Product division.

Andrew S. Ritchie last month was named publisher of the Winnipeg Free Press.

Ritchie, who formerly served as vice president of operations at The Globe and Mail in Toronto, assumed his new position Jan. 30.

Ronald Stern, chairman of FP Canadian Newspapers Limited Partnership, which owns the Free Press, said Ritchie will bring valuable knowledge, experience and energy to the newspaper.

“We are delighted to have Andy Ritchie join our management team in Winnipeg,” Stern  said .

Ritchie has 19 years’ experience in the newspaper industry, working for papers in Great Britain, New Zealand and Canada. He joined The Globe and Mail in 1999 and coordinated the newspaper’s printing operations, which are based in six commercial plants across the country.

The Free Press serves the Winnipeg and Manitoba markets, with an average seven-day circulation of 125,000.

 

INDUSTRY

John A. (Jack) Williams was named to the newly created position of president of Gannett Digital. Williams will oversee all Internet and digital initiatives for the company’s domestic operations.

In other Gannett corporate news, Leslie Sears was named an assistant controller while Wendell J. Van Lare, vice president and senior labor counsel, will head Gannett’s labor relations group. He will take over from John Jaske, who retired at the end of January.

Kramer rejoins NYDN from NYT

The (New York) Daily News named Marc Kramer as chief executive officer.

Kramer joined the paper from The New York Times, where he served as senior vice president of circulation.

Kramer had formerly worked at the Daily News from 1993 to 1998, during which time he served as vice president and general counsel, according to the Daily News. At The Times, he held a number of positions, including senior vice president of production.

According to an article in the Daily News, Kramer said his priorities would include developing the paper’s print edition as well as concentrating on its online efforts.

Knight Ridder named Steven T. Broas as publisher of The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Ind. Broas will also serve as president and chief executive officer of Fort Wayne Newspapers, which prints The News-Sentinel and the Journal Gazette.

 

Morris Publishing Group LLC named Derek J. May as publisher of The St. Augustine (Fla.) Record. He replaces Ronnie Hughes, who retired at the end of last year after 38 years of service with Morris.

 

OBITUARIES

Dick Tilanus, chief executive officer of Punch Graphix plc died last month as a result of complications following a routine operation.

“We are deeply saddened by Dick’s death, which was wholly unexpected,” said Geoffrey White, chairman of Punch Graphix. “He will be greatly missed by all his friends and colleagues at Punch Graphix, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family.”

Jan Smits, the company’s chief financial officer, will assume the role of acting CEO until a permanent one is named.
