At The Wire

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals last month affirmed a lower court ruling in favor of Goss International Corp. in its five-year legal battle with Tokyo Kikai Seisakusho Ltd.

TKS asked the 8th Circuit to review the 2003 U.S. Circuit Court verdict that found the press vendor guilty of selling presses at below-market rates, in the process violating the now-repealed 1916 Antidumping Act. The jury awarded Goss $10 million, a sum that’s tripled under antitrust law.

TKS attorney Peter Toren told Newspapers & Technology that the firm is evaluating its next steps. “We obviously disagree with the decision in the 8th Circuit and analyzing how to go forward.”

Prime UV said it’s now offering its UV curing system for double-wide offset presses. The double-wide system’s lamps are longer than the single-wide version, but the curing system can be used at the presses’ maximum printing speed, the company said. The system is engineered to work with UV inks, including Flint Group’s Arrowlith UV inks.

Gannett Co. Inc. said it will begin sending sports, weather and flight information to consumers’ mobile phones through a deal it signed with 4Info, a Palo Alto, Calif., mobile search firm. Gannett will roll out the service in USA Today this month and make it available through other papers and broadcast properties. Gannett also purchased a minority stake in 4Info; financial details weren’t disclosed.

Johnston Press plc has gone live in half its regions with Atex Group Ltd.’s Matrix circulation app. The publisher, which prints more than 8 million newspapers each week, expects to roll out the app to the rest of its titles later this year, Atex said.

Baldwin Technology Co. Inc. said it opened a new Italian subsidiary to serve newspapers and other customers in that region. Baldwin Italy SrL, based in Milan, will be headed by Aldo Parodi and Martin Buttlar.

Tribune Interactive is adding video streaming capabilities to all its newspaper and broadcast Web sites. The publisher tapped New York-based WorldNow to provide software, consulting and support. Among Trib newspaper sites already providing streaming are chicagotribune.com, newsday.com and orlandosentinel.com.

Harland Simon named John Staiano senior vice president, Americas. He previously served as vice president of sales for the Oakbrook, Ill., press controls and software vendor.
