At The Wire

Fort Wayne (Ind.) Newspapers formally signed its contract with TKS (USA) to install a ColorTop 7000CDH press. Knight Ridder, the majority owner of FWN, earlier this year signed a letter of intent with TKS to buy the press, which will be in production in December 2007. FWN publishes the afternoon News-Sentinel and morning Journal Gazette. The machine will be configured as six 4-color towers with two 2:5:5 jaw folders and will sport a 21-inch cutoff and 48-inch web width (see related story, page 1).

IMC America released its Vantage Plus CTP developer reduction system, engineered to reduce usage and cost of plate processing chemicals by 50 percent. IMC claims that Vantage Plus takes 50 percent of the overflow of developer chemicals -normally sent to a waste drain and collected for a fee - and filters, treats and blends it with fresh chemistry for resupply to a user’s computer-to-plate system, resulting in “significant” savings on developer costs and 50 percent less waste from the processor, IMC said.

Several newspapers in the United States teamed up with NewsNotes Advertising to offer discounted and donated front-page advertising notes to the American Red Cross, asking readers for Hurricane Katrina donations. NewsNotes printed the notes while NAStar Inc. donated the pressure-sensitive label stock.

New ProImage is providing its Newsway workflow app to three Gannett newspapers: The Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, S.D., The Burlington (Vt.) Free Press and The Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Clarity Media Group is adding a third Examiner to its stable of free papers, this one in Baltimore. The (Baltimore) Examiner will debut next spring, with a press run of 250,000.

The Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal is upgrading its bundle distribution system with equipment from Miracom Computer Corp. and Samuel Strapping Systems.

The paper will install two MK6 bottomwrappers from Samuel that are equipped with Miracom’s MiraJet inkjet heads to produce bundle identification labels. Miracom will also upgrade the paper’s MiraDock bundle distribution software as well, the supplier said.

Total Mailroom Support Inc. said it’s installing a waste conveying system at the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel. The system will mesh with seven GMA Inc. press conveyors and transport spoiled copies to a waste compactor.
