The Washington Post last month launched an
electronic edition of the newspaper, using software developed by Olive Software
Inc.
The online version, available at
www.washingtonpost.com/ee, includes all of the features contained in the print
edition of the newspaper, said David Dadisman, vice president of circulation for
The Post. “Our readers will now have access to an exact replica of the print
edition wherever and whenever they choose,” he said.
Meantime, The Post also selected NewsEngin to
build a software application that will coordinate and organize all event
listings for the newspaper and its Web site.
The EventTracker software will serve as a central
location for all calendar items, such as nightclub events, plays, gallery shows
and community activities.
Items can be filed to the database by newsroom
staff members, employees of the newspaper’s Web site or outside organizations.
From a Web browser, users will be able to export
selected items from EventTracker to a range of output targets like The Post’s
CCI Europe editorial system, washingtonpost.com, personal data assistants and a
master newsroom-planning calendar.
The Post already uses NewsEngin software to help
reporters and editors organize and share contacts and information and to
coordinate its art department workflow.
EventTracker will offer the same features to
Windows and Macintosh users. The application’s back-end database will be based
on the open-source PHP/MySQL platform. Staff members will be able to enter
information about an event on a single screen.
Administrators and managers also can review all
changes to an event’s information, including the time of each change and the
name of the user who made it.
Administrators will also be able to customize
entry screens for various types of users.
