Mactive Inc. made the following announcements. New staffers Bob Sullivan, Bran Varnell, David Almeida, Ken Hodges and Andy Lazarus joined the professional services department. Linda Nilsson was promoted to director of professional services for Mactive Nordic in Sweden. Kim Mallory was promoted to director of professional services. Aubrey Arredondo was named project manager. Lin Edwards was promoted to customer support manager.

Ridder named new chairman of Newspaper Association of America


P. Anthony “Tony” Ridder, chairman and chief executive officer of Knight Ridder Inc. in San Jose, Calif., was elected chairman of the Newspaper Association of America at its annual meeting.

Ridder succeeds William Dean Singleton, vice chairman and chief executive officer of MediaNews Group Inc., Denver, who will continue to serve on the board as immediate past chairman.

Ridder was named chairman and CEO of Knight Ridder in 1995. He has served as president since 1989. Ridder joined the Knight Ridder corporate staff as president of the newspaper division in 1986.

Other officers elected were Vice Chairman Gregg K. Jones, co-publisher of the Greeneville (Tenn.) Sun; Secretary Jay R. Smith, president of Cox Newspapers Inc., Atlanta; and Treasurer Boisfeuillet Jones Jr., publisher and CEO, The Washington Post.

Newly elected to two-year terms on the NAA board of directors were Walter E. Hussman Jr., publisher, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Wehco Media, Little Rock; Robert M. Nutting, president and CEO, Ogden Newspapers, Wheeling, (W.Va.); Paul Tash, editor and president, St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times; and Kathleen M. Waltz, president and publisher, Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel.

 

Lastra unit Western Lithotech named John J. Hsu engineering and maintenance manager. Jonathan Goodin was named new methods manager and Paul Schunk was named production manager.

 

PRESS

Brian LaBine was named president of Dauphin Graphic Machines Inc. LaBine previously served as vice president of operations at Quebecor World’s Retail Group. Chris Lunt will assume the role of chief executive officer.

 

POSTPRESS

Greg Greenan joined Prim Hall Enterprises as vice president of newspaper sales. He has 26 years of experience selling mailroom equipment. He also worked as vice president of sales for Machine Design/Motion Systems.

 

INDUSTRY

Craig Moon was named president and publisher of USA Today. He replaces Tom Curley, who became president and chief executive officer of The Associated Press. Moon most recently served as executive vice president of Gannett Co. Inc.’s newspaper division. He also served as president of The Tennessean in Nashville and president of Gannett’s Piedmont Newspaper Group.

Meantime, H. Jesse Arnelle, Solomon D. Trujillo and Karen Hastie Williams were re-elected to Gannett’s board of directors.

 

Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. hired Tom Shafer as corporate vice president of production. Since 1999, Shafer has been president and chief executive officer of CMYK University and president of OpsFusion, a newspaper operations consulting group.

He served as publisher of the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger and has held senior management positions with Cox Newspapers, including vice president of operations in Dayton, Ohio.

Shafer also served as corporate director of production technologies at Thomson Newspapers. He was also a founding team member of USA Today, serving as its first vice president of production field operations

 

CanWest Global Communications Corp. made wholesale executive changes at its money-losing National Post, removing two editors and eliminating the position of publisher.

Axed in the move are Ken Whyte, editor-in-chief, Martin Newland, deputy editor and Peter Viner, publisher. CanWest said Viner would remain with the company to oversee its radio acquisition efforts. Also leaving as part of the reorganization are senior sales, marketing and finance executives, the company said.

Matthew Fraser, the Post’s media columnist, was named editor-in-chief, while Bob McKenzie will become general manager. Michael Cooke, editor-in-chief of the Chicago Sun-Times, will serve as an advisor.

CanWest also named David Asper chairman of the Post. David is the older brother of CanWest chief executive Leonard Asper.

 

Thomas R. Norton, vice president of operations at the York (Pa.) Newspaper Co., has been named managing director of NAA-Ifra Technical Solutions LLC, a new joint operation between the Newspaper Association of America and Ifra, a German-based international newspaper publishing association.
