Democrat-Gazette first newspaper to buy Titan

Staff Report

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock has become the first newspaper to buy K&M Newspaper Services Inc.’s new Titan G3 inserting system.

The newspaper is expanding its distribution center to accommodate the new rotary inserter.

The G3 will be configured with three delivery modes. In dual-delivery mode, the inserter will be capable of delivering nine inserts into one jacket at speeds of up to 48,000 copies per hour. In single-delivery mode, the inserter can deliver 21 inserts in one jacket to a single stacker or 20 inserts into one jacket, splitting into two stackers at speeds of up to 24,000 copies per hour.

In addition, K&M is installing its Image NT packaging system on the Democrat Gazette’s two existing 1372 inserters and installing a K-track conveyor system.

Meantime, K&M said it’s expanding its current Monroe, N.Y., production facility by 15,000 square feet.

The extra space will provide room for K&M’s machining center, according to President Mark Jacobs, who added that the introduction of the Titan inserting machine made it necessary for the company to increase its facility.

New orders

Beyond Little Rock, K&M also sold systems to eight other newspapers, including The Sun in Lowell, Mass., which is upgrading two remanufactured 1372 inserters with K&M’s Image NT packaging system. The daily is also installing two K-track press conveyors, three insert conveyors and a dock distribution system.

Atlanta Offset, meanwhile, purchased a remanufactured 1372 Image PC packing controls system and two conveyors.

Ediciones Del Norte in Monterrey, Mexico, purchased a remanufactured 1372 inserter, K-Track press and inserter conveyor and roller-top conveyor.

Central Michigan Newspapers in Mt. Pleasant, installed a modified NP 630 inserter with new-fold optional pockets, clip inhibit and Image NT packaging controls. The fold optional pockets allows users to insert into a fold jacket, broadsheet jacket or tabloid jacket.

Four other newspapers, the Post Journal in Jamestown, N.Y., News Sentinel in Parkersburg, W.Va., the Tribune Star in Terre Haute, Ind., and the Tribune Review in Greensburg Pa., purchased various K&M equipment.
