Canberra daily buys 60-seat Atex system

Federal Capital Press, publisher of The Canberra Times and several other Canberra, Australia-based publications, purchased a Atex Media Command publishing system to support its editorial and advertising production needs.

The editorial system will support about 60 users and will be used to produce all the newspaper titles published by Federal Capital Press, the leading newspaper publisher of Canberra, Australia’s capital city. Federal Capital Press is owned by Rural Press Limited, Australia’s largest agricultural and regional media company.

Federal’s Atex deployment will include a Multi-Media Command editorial and content management system; Edition Builder; LayoutXpert, a pagination automation application; Adobe InDesign integration and Web publishing tool CyberNews.Web.

Federal Capital Press also will install an Atex Media Command open prepress interface package to manage high-resolution graphics and an interface to the newspaper’s CTP output.

A second phase comprises Atex’s Sales Command advertising application, which will support about 40 users. The publisher’s current advertising database will be converted from the existing net-linx Publishing Solutions’ system to the new advertising software.

Both Sales Command and Multi-Media Command are built on a common multitier Genera database architecture. The system will use standard Intel-based file servers running the current release of Microsoft Windows and SQL database. Delivery of the first phase is scheduled for this year.
