PREPRESS

Howard Fenton, a nationally known author, trainer, consultant and speaker on digital technologies in the graphic arts field, recently joined Printing Industries of America and Graphic Arts Technical Foundation OnSite as an independent consultant. Fenton operates DTP Ink (DeskTop Prepress for Print) in Thornton, Colo., and specializes in digital prepress production methods, techniques and equipment.

Masthead International announced an expanded single- width regional services in the southeastern United States. Based in Decatur, Ala., the program will be operated by Rick Boy, who joined Masthead in June and brings 24 years of experience in preventative maintenance, training, inspecting, repairing and rebuilding single width presses. Boy serviced the southeastern U.S. for 20 years as a Goss field technician.



US Ink, a division of Sun Chemical Corp., appointed Gregory M. Lawson executive vice president. He is responsible for direction of international operations including strategic planning, sales and marketing, as well as information technology.

 

INDUSTRY

The New York Times announced several editorial appointments. Susan Chira has been named editorial director of book development, succeeding Mitchel R. Levitas, who plans to retire. Kathleen O. McElroy was named associate managing editor for weekends, in charge of news coverage in the Sunday and Monday newspapers. Katherine J. Roberts will succeed Chira as editor of the Week in Review and Jim Roberts was named national editor, overseeing The Time’s 25-member reporting staff throughout the United States outside of Washington D.C.

 

The Seattle Times named Peter Birdsall production manager. Birdsall will be working out of the company’s North Creek production facility north of Seattle in Bothell, Wash. He will be responsible for overseeing platemaking, newsprint receiving and warehouse, pressroom packaging, night operations, machinists, electricians, systems engineering and the North Creek facilities and safety operations.

 

Danforth W. Austin was named vice chairman of Ottaway Newspapers Inc., the community newspaper subsidiary of Dow Jones and Co., which also publishes The Wall Street Journal. The announcement was made as part of a larger set of structural and senior management changes at the parent company and is effective immediately. Austin will remain a vice president of Dow Jones.

 

The Las Vegas Review-Journal and Las Vegas Sun named Karen Grover national advertising manager. Karen will be responsible for handling all of the national advertising accounts for the Review-Journal, the Sun and all niche publications. Her accounts include national automotive, financial institutions, movie studios, pharmaceutical companies, travel and other national organizations advertising in the newspapers.

 

Jerry Williamson, chairman of the board of the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation and Chuck Stay, chairman of the board of the Printing Industries of America, announced the appointment of Michael Makin as chief executive officer for both organizations. Makin was selected from a field of over 350 candidates and brings 16 years of trade association management experience to the position, including seven years in the printing industry.
