Unica Corp. recently announced that the Los Angeles Times selected Unica’s enterprise marketing management software, Affinium to develop more customer-focused marketing strategies across multiple channels.

By using Affinium, The Times will be able to better manage its multi-channel marketing campaigns by profiling and segmenting its customer base to better target offers and to identify cross-sell opportunities. Affinium also will help the newspaper determine both the best channels and the optimum frequency for communicating with individual subscribers, helping The Times improve sales efficiency and effectiveness.

The Times selected Affinium for its ease-of-use, quick deployment and robust architecture. Instead of relying on programmers, Times marketers will be able to develop customer models independently after only a few training days.

 

Easypress Technologies recently announced the release of the first-ever Developer Edition of Atomik, its leading QuarkXPress-to-XML solution. Atomik 3.0 Developer Edition contains all the functionality of the standard version of Atomik 3.0 plus tighter third party integration and automation enabling it to become an integral component of editorial systems including Quark Publishing System.

Atomik 3.0 Developer Edition includes support for AutoPilot — a QuarkXPress and QPS automation tool — developed by Callas Software in Germany.

Additionally the AutoPilot support for QPS, QuarkXPress documents can be automatically checked out from QPS and then automatically extract the content as XML from the QuarkXPress documents and the documents are automatically checked back into QPS, all without any manual user processes.

 

Dynagram, manufacturer of DynaStrip imposition software, acquired the DK&A InPosition product line in February.

By acquiring DK&A InPosition and InPosition Lite, Dynagram will be able to offer a complete range of imposition software products.

DynaStrip is a stand-alone imposition product and InPosition is an Xtension for imposing native QuarkXPress files and EPS files from any application.

 

X-Rite Inc. and Monaco Systems Inc. have teamed up to provide winning solutions for advanced color profiling. The new X-RiteColor Ensemble solutions featuring Monaco’s MonacoProof color management solution and

X-Rite’s color measurement instruments will now be available directly from X-Rite.

The special X-RiteColor Ensemble Solutions bundles the MonacoProof with X-Rite’s Monitor Optimizer and DTP41 AutoScan Spectrophotometer. The DTP41 Auto-Scanning Spectrophotometer provides single-button operation and automation, and is capable of measuring over 900 color patches in under ten minutes.

 

xpedx, a leading national distributor of printing and graphic imaging prepress equipment and supplies, agreed to become an Enfocus Software Certified Reseller and Certified Trainer. Under the program, xpedx will resell the latest Enfocus Certified PDF Workflow solutions as well as offer Certified Training and Support for those products. In addition to having EnfocusCertified Sales experts, xpedx will have a Certified Enfocus trainer on staff at its Digital Imaging National Technology Center in Cleveland to support its customers on Enfocus’ solutions.

 

Agfa Monotype Corp. recently announced that 19 TrueType fonts are now shipping with the Mac OS X operating system. Fonts for Mac OS X were selected from Agfa Monotype’s library of over 7,000 fonts.

The 19 TrueType fonts for Mac OS X comprise four typeface families: Baskerville, Gill Sans, ITC American Typewriter and Papyrus. Fonts from two of the families, Gill Sans and Baskerville, were selected from Agfa Monotype’s Enhanced Screen Quality line, a collection of fonts engineered specifically for optimal legibility at virtually any point size and resolution, whether on-screen or in print.

Every character within each ESQ font was hand-tuned using advanced hinting technology to ensure the highest level of clarity on any device.

 

The Los Angeles Times signed an agreement with NewspaperDirect to provide readers with printed copies of each day’s national edition of the Los Angeles Times via major hotel cruise ships and licensed foreign distributors around the world.

Each day the final version of national edition is converted into a PDF file, complete with all editorial and advertising content. The file is transferred electronically to NewspaperDirect. At the subscriber location, copies are printed in black and white by high-speed printers on both sides of quality paper, collated, stitched and personally addressed to each reader.

 

The Globe and Mail in Canada signed a contract with CCI Europe for a CCI NewsDesk 6 system. The newspaper said the new system will better position it for moving to a convergent environment.

CCI NewsDesk is a complete editorial solution designed to streamline the editorial process from story creation to final publication, no matter what the distribution platform. CCI NewsDesk is also customizable and can be tailored to a newspaper’s individual needs.

 

The Antelope Valley (Calif.) Press is generating additional revenue by utilizing the upsell features and increased functionality of ClassSpeed. The newspaper began using ClassSpeed, Digital Technology International’s classified advertising order entry and pagination system, earlier this year.

Reports indicate that the paper is averaging 640 border sales per month and is upselling 80 percent to 85 percent of their liner ads to its Web site.

 

Creo announced it will move production of its Iris proofing products from Billerica, Mass., to Vancouver, Canada, in 2002. Customer support and engineering for Iris products will also move to the Vancouver area.

There is expected to be no interruption in manufacturing, product supply or levels of customer service as a result of the move. Between 100 and 120 regular full-time employees will be affected by the move.

 

Agfa’s Digital Solutions Road Tour, which debuted last year, will be making another run around the country this year. The Digital Solutions 18-wheel tractor trailer serves as a mobile showcase of Agfa’s products and technology. The 2002 tour will begin in southern California and will spend the remainder of the winter months in the West Coast before heading back south and into Texas.

Products on display include Agfa’s Apogee workflow software, the Agfa Sherpa inkjet digital proofing system and Agfa computer-to-plate technology. There will be Agfa technical experts available on the tour to demonstrate products and perform press tests and pressroom audits.

 

Celartem Technology Inc. recently introduced Vector Format for Zooming technology software, developed to scale, compress, archive, view and zoom up to 1,200 percent. VFZ also enables users to print at fine art quality, track, manage and secure high-quality images without loss of quality. Users can convert and reconvert TIFF, JPEG and BMP files to VFZ format for manipulation, transfer and storage of digital files.
