Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro available later this year

by Tara McMeekin
Associate Editor

When professional photographers descended upon Orlando, Fla., in February for the 2002 Photo Marketing Association’s International Conference & Trade Show, there were plenty of offerings in the digital photography realm.

For Fuji Photo Film U.S.A. Inc., the show served as the venue for debuting its latest professional digital camera, the FinePix S2 Pro. The FinePix S2 Pro is the successor to the FinePix S1 Pro for professional photographers.

The single-lens-reflex digital camera builds on the FinePix S1 Pro’s reputation for picture color and detail, and offers professional photographers control over the editing, transferring and storing of high-resolution images.

The FinePix S2 Pro features Fujifilm’s Super charge-coupled device sensor system for professional photographers. With 6.17 million effective pixels, the digital camera can produce an image file with 4,256-by-2,848 (12.1 million) recorded pixels for color and detail. The new camera also features RAW mode, which delivers images before they have been processed by the camera’s internal algorithmic settings, enabling photographers to experiment with their photographs as they wish.

The FinePix S2 Pro also offers users the choice of a dual-storage media option: SmartMedia and IBM’s Microdrive, which when inserted into the camera’s CompactFlash (Card Type II) slot, allow photographers out in the field to take a large number of photographs without running out of storage space.

The camera incorporates a dual PC interface for increased workflow and fast transfer of large image files from the camera to a Macintosh or PC via FireWire or a USB interface.

The FinePix S2 Pro has four shooting modes, four exposure modes, five variable program modes and nine modes for white balance.

The camera features a Nikon F mount and accepts every AF Nikkor and most manual AI or AI-S Nikkor lenses. The camera has a top shutter speed of 1/4,000 of a second and continuous shooting of approximately two frames per second up to a total of seven frames.

Photographers can record images at resolutions of 4,256-by-2,848 pixels, 3,024-by-2,016 pixels, 2,304-by-1,536 pixels and 1,440-by-960 pixels. Images can be recorded in TIFF-RGB, RAW and JPEG formats. Fine and normal compression modes are included within the JPEG file format and images can be displayed on the camera’s 1.8-inch low-temperature polysilicon TFT display.

The FinePix S2 Pro will be available for purchase later this year. The suggested retail price is $3,495.
