It is with much sadness and regret that we
announce the passing of our dear friend, Edward H. Owen. Ed was 79, and died
unexpectedly on Monday, March 11, 2002.
Ed was a war hero, a champion of the newspaper
industry and a much-valued contributor to Newspapers & Technology. He and
his wife Jane worked with our staff for more than 10 years, his most recent
article appearing in the February issue. He loved to talk about newspapers,
vendors and various technologies. With more than 50 years’ experience in the
newspaper industry, he was a former editor of various newspaper production
magazines and was an international correspondent for several different industry
trade journals.
For those of you that did not have the pleasure
of meeting Ed, he seldom spoke of his valor when he landed on the beach in
Normandy on D-Day.
He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church
and the American Legion Post #92 in Hollywood, Fla. He was a former Captain of
Auxiliary Police of Bay Village for 17 years. He was a member of National Ski
Patrol for 11 years and traveled all over America.
Ed was a lifetime member of the Cleveland Club of
Printing House Craftsmen, an Alumnus of the Year of Rochester Institute of
Technology, and a member of the board of directors of the Association of Graphic
Art Consultants. He also received two Golden Keys Awards from the Printing
Industry of America.
He is survived by his wife Jane; his sons,
Jeffrey of Newport, Ky., and Gary of Delray Beach Fla.; his daughter, Susan
Miles of Boulder, Colo.; his brother William Brice of Falmouth, Mass; and three
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and four Godchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
General Memorial Fund of St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1704 Buchanan Street,
Hollywood, FL 33020.
Ed’s enthusiasm and love of the newspaper
industry will be sorely missed. Our best wishes to Jane and his family and
friends.
