JRC buys Philly papers

Journal Register Co. last month announced the company’s acquisition of the assets of News Gleaner Publications Inc. and Big Impressions Web Printing Inc., which are based in northeast Philadelphia, and include 15 free, non-daily suburban Philadelphia publications and a commercial printing operation.

News Gleaner Publications is a privately held company, and terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Total revenues for the newspaper were $5 million for fiscal year 2001.

The acquisition includes eight weekly newspapers serving northeast Philadelphia — the six Northeast News Gleaner publications that serve Frankford, Mayfair, Torresdale, Far Northeast, Rhawnhurst and Bustleton; the Northeast Breeze; and the Olney Times; and the seven monthly Life publications serving the following Montgomery County towns: Glenside, Jenkintown, Roslyn, Abington, Willow Grove, Hatboro, Horsham and Warminster.

Journal Register’s greater Philadelphia cluster consists of seven daily newspapers and 105 non-daily publications. The daily newspapers include The Trentonian in Trenton, N.J., and in Pennsylvania, the Delaware County Daily and Sunday Times in Primos, the Daily Local News in West Chester, The Mercury in Pottstown, The Times Herald in Norristown, The Reporter in Lansdale and The Phoenix in Phoenixville. Journal Register also owns the following Pennsylvania non-daily newspaper groups: Montgomery Newspapers in Fort Washington, which includes Main Line Life, InterCounty Newspaper Group in Newtown, Chesapeake Publications in Kennett Square, Acme Newspapers in Ardmore, which includes the Main Line Times, and Suburban Publications in Wayne, which includes the Suburban and Wayne Times.
