PREPRESS

George Rose joined Mactive Inc. as an implementation specialist. Working out of Rochelle, N.Y., he will provide on-site implementation services for Mactive’s sites, focusing on support for Money Manager, the company’s accounts receivable package.

 

Fuji Photo Film Co. Ltd. named David Murray as director of sales and marketing for myfujifilm.com. Murray brings 25 years of graphic arts experience to the position and is responsible for the sales and marketing of myfujifilm.com within North America.

 

Printing Developments Inc. named Tom Bevan as director of sales and marketing. In his new position he oversees PDI’s domestic sales and customer service personnel.

 

PRESS

MAN Roland appointed Eric Belcher as its chief financial officer for North American operations. He is responsible for the financial performance of the company. Belcher replaces Birgit Kuhn, who is returning to Germany to take another position with MAN Roland.

 

Bowater Inc. re-elected Arnold Nemirow as its chairman, president and chief executive officer for a three-year term. Arthur Sawchuk and Cinda Hallman were also re-elected for three-year terms to Bowater’s board of directors.

 

POSTPRESS

Brad Moseley was named to the sales staff of Ferag Americas. He is responsible for covering a number of western states for the company.

 

NEW MEDIA

Chris Gulker joined RealTimeImage Inc. as vice president of worldwide marketing. Gulker brings 20 years of experience in technology marketing and publishing to the company. He is responsible for marketing the RealTimeProof product line throughout North America and the world.

Gulker’s position was formerly held by Yehuda Messinger, now RTI’s vice president of worldwide business development.

 

INDUSTRY

James Slife joined the Printing Industries of America as chief executive officer and principal shareholder of The Pioneer Group in Waterloo, Iowa. The Pioneer Group consists of Pioneer Graphics, based in Waterloo, and Pioneer Communications, based in Des Moines.

 

Steve Bonoff was named to succeed Hank Hatch as president of The International Prepress Association. As president, Bonoff directs and coordinates member services and programs and promote the IPA and its membership.

 

Gannett Co. Inc. board members James Johnson and Stephen Munn were re-elected at the company’s recent annual meeting. Also re-elected was Gannett Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Douglas McCorkindale.

McCorkindale announced to shareholders at the meeting that former health and human services secretary Donna Shalala is also joining Gannett’s board of directors.

 

Paul Davidson was appointed chief executive of Newsquest. Davidson, former group managing director, takes over for Executive Chairman Jim Brown, who is retiring at the end of July. Brown will continue as non-executive chairman. Paul Hunter will be appointed Newsquest’s finance director to replace John Pfeil, who is leaving Newsquest. Hunter previously served as group finance controller for the company since 1997.

 

Lee Enterprises elected Carl Schmidt as its vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer. Schmidt was formerly senior vice president and chief financial officer of Johnson Outdoors Inc. in Racine, Wis., and a partner of a public accounting firm in Milwaukee.

Lee Enterprises President and Chief Executive Officer Mary Junck said Schmidt brings a broad array of experience and skills that will help Lee sharpen its focus on expanding in newspaper publishing.

 

Howell Raines, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who has been the editorial page editor of The New York Times for the past eight years, will become the newspaper’s executive editor in September. Raines was appointed to the position by Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher of The Times and chairman of The New York Times Co.

Raines succeeds Joseph Lelyveld, who announced plans to step down after seven years as executive editor. A replacement for Raines has not yet been named.

 

Marc Lacter returned to the Los Angeles Business Journal as editor on June 11. Lacter, a veteran journalist, previously served as editor of the publication from July 1996 to February 2000. He has also worked at the Los Angeles Daily News, the San Francisco Chronicle and Investor’s Business Daily. Michael Stremfel will assume the position of associate editor of the paper.

 

 

The Los Angeles Times named Virginia Ellis as Sacramento bureau chief. Ellis succeeds Rone Tempest who is assuming the position of senior California correspondent after serving as bureau chief since 1999.

Ellis most recently gained national recognition for a series of stories that ultimately led to the resignation of California’s Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush. She was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in beat reporting for that coverage and was also the recipient of the 2001 George Polk and Seldon Ring Awards.

 

The Research and Engineering Council of the Graphic Arts Industry elected the following print and publishing industry executives as officers at its recent 51st annual meeting in Baltimore: Laura Gale of priNexus as president; Jeffrey White of printCafe as executive vice president and secretary, Lynn Poretta of Hallmark Cards as executive vice president and treasurer, Jill Austin of Thomson Legal & Regulatory as vice president, printing, Charles Dine of Banta as vice president, binding, finishing and distribution, Robert Desmond of East Carolina University as vice president, education, Orlano Boleda as vice president, digital networked production systems and Richard Holliday of 3P as vice president, strategic planning.

 

The World Association of Newspapers elected Seok Hyun Hong first vice president. Hong, the chairman and chief executive officer of the South Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo, is the first Asian to hold the position. The election to first vice president puts him in line to become president of the Paris-based WAN in May of 2002.

 

Gloria Brown Anderson of The New York Times was elected president of the World Editors Forum for a two year term. The World Editors Forum is the global association that deals with issues of professional concern to senior news executives. Anderson was also recently named vice president for international and editorial development at the New York Times News Services Division.
