Latest construction update

Staff Report

JUNE UPDATE

The Pulliam Production Center is beginning to look less like a construction site and more like a building.

The majority of the exterior work on the building is complete. The site now has outside walls and windows.

“Things are going really well,” said Richard Rinehart, project director at The Star. “We just finished pouring all of the floor slab in the building between the mailroom and the reelroom, so that allows us to get more people in that area working.”

In the last month

Interior work continues on the press hall in preparation for delivery of the MAN Roland presses. Installation of the drywall is complete in the press bay, and painting is underway. Drywall installation on the mezzanine level was also started.

Scaffolding covers the interior walls of the
Pulliam Production Center’s press hall. MAN Roland
is scheduled to be on site to begin equipment
installation July 2.

Concrete work has stepped up at the site. The floors of the mailroom and the newsprint warehouse were completed in May, and other concrete items were completed, including footings and a retaining wall. Other items that are being worked on include:

• CSX delivered the switch for the rail spur that will deliver newsprint to the facility. Installation of the spur was scheduled to begin at the end of May.

• Siding on the south wall is complete and windows were installed on the east side of the press bay.

• Roofing work was completed on the press bay, and gutter material was installed.

Coming up

MAN Roland will be on site beginning July 2, when they will make preparations to install the automatic roll loading equipment beginning July 9. Setting up the roll loading system is expected to take five to six weeks. Installation of the GeoMAN press will begin in late August, possibly as early as the 20th of the month.

The press units — shaftless technology

MAN Roland - Shaftless Drive System

The GeoMAN press will feature MAN Roland’s Shaftless Drive System, and The Indianapolis Star’s press will have more than 230 individual motors attached to it, including motors for the press couples, folders, superstructure and infeed.

The system is tied together electronically by what MAN Roland calls a virtual drive shaft. The system sends out a timing signal to all of the motors and controllers and times all of the units together.

The drive system also comes with built-in drive diagnostics, which will check the motors before the newspaper goes into a production run, verifying that all of the motors are working properly. The diagnostics system will also alert the press operator if a motor begins to experience problems during production.

The motors on the units are directly coupled to the blanket cylinder to allow little, if any, play in the blanket. This also allows the newspaper to individually plate the units so they can change plates in one area of the press, and keep production moving in other areas.
