Newspapers and Technology September 2000 News BriefsHarding*Ankarlo design-Alliance is currently working on projects with The Beaufort (S.C.) Gazette, The Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Newspaper Agency, and The Washington Post. Some of the projects include facility master planning, end-to-end process analysis and feasibility studies, end-to-end press implementation planning, and strategic product planning. Dauphin Graphic Machines Inc. announced the sale of new press equipment to the Daily Chronicle in Dekalb, Ill., and to Lakes Offset in Detroit Lakes, Minn. The Dekalb Daily Chronicle purchased nine DGM 850 press units, the DGM 1030 and DGM 1050 folders. Pamarco Global Graphics expanded its technical services offered. The company now provides complete anilox roll analysis as part of regular audits available to customers, including cell volume, depth-to-opening ratio, wear, plugging and general roll condition. Sun Chemical, a manufacturer of high-performance organic pigments, announced that it has acquired the remaining 50 percent ownership of CDR Pigments of Badalona, Spain, from Flint Ink Co., making Sun the sole owners of CDR Pigments. Previously, Sun Chemical obtained half its stake in 1999 as part as its acquisition of the Coates Lorilleux printing ink business from TotalFina. Bowater Inc. announced that it has agreed to acquire the Newsprint South Inc. paper mill for a cash purchase price of $370 million, including $8.9 million of debt. The mill is located in Grenada, Miss., and was purchased from GE Capital Structured Finance Group and shareholders. The mill has an annual production capacity of approximately 250,000 metric tons of newsprint. It will strength Bowater’s Southeastern presence and allow for Southwestern expansion, said Bowater. Bowater anticipates that the transaction, which is subject to regulatory approvals, will be completed in the third quarter. Flink Ink Corp. fianlized its acquisition of Alper Ink Group. Alper Ink Group is the parent company of five subsidiaries and affiliates specializing in inks and colorants primarily for the packaging graphics industry. The National Printing Equipment Association has published a new how-to booklet, “Safe Cleaning of Flexographic Presses.” The new manual is a companion to “Safe Cleaning of Offset Sheetfed Presses,” published in 1997, and “Safe Cleaning of Offset Webfed Presses,” published in 1998. The new booklet contains an overview on safe procedures, common misconceptions and hazards, and how to prevent accidents, including an explanation of the Inch-SAFE-Service Procedure for cleaning. Madison Paper Co., a newly formed company that is a wholly owned affiliate of Myllykoski Corp. of Finland, has acquired the assets of the FSC Paper Co. located in Alsip, Ill. Baldwin Technology Co. Inc. has relocated its corporate headquarters from Norwalk, Conn., to Shelton, Conn. The new address is 12 Commerce Drive, P.O. Box 901, Shelton, CT 06484-0941. The main telephone number is 203.402.1000 and the fax number is 203.402.5500. AGV Products Inc. relocated to 8012 Tower Point Drive, Charlotte, NC 28227. Their telephone and fax numbers remain the same. Newstec, a provider of remanufactured inserters and integrated mailroom control systems, sold products to the Denver Rocky Mountain News, the Chesapeake Publishing Co. in Easton, Md., the Community Newspapers Holdings Inc. in Birmingham, Ala., and the Orange County (Calif.) Register. The Knoxville (Tenn.) News-Sentinel selected GMA to provide a complete packaging and distribution system for its new production facility. The system extends from press pick-up to palletizers. The project will include the first US sale of GMA’s Bundler and Palletizing systems, according to Randy Seidel, GMA president and chief executive officer. The new CGATS.12/1 PDF/X-1 file format, recently approved as an ANSI standard, is now available for purchase from National Printing Equipment Association. NPES serves as secretariat to the Committee for Graphic Arts Technologies Standards, which drafted the standard. The ANSI standard is now out for ballot as an international standard through the International Organization for Standardization. The balloting and follow-up processes will be completed next spring. The MetroWest Daily News, the largest daily newspaper of Community Newspaper Co., was selected by the Suburban Newspaper Association to receive its top honors in the General Excellence category. The Board of Directors of Audit Bureau of Circulations voted to advance a U.S. Newspaper Division proposal on the definition and reporting of paid circulation, modified the newspaper sold with other services policy, and expanded the definition of newspaper school subscriptions in a recent meeting. The Board also supported paid circulation and reporting principles advanced by the Consumer Magazine Division. These principles will provide the basis for the upcoming Consumer Magazine Division proposal. Chuck Blevins & Associates announced projects with Seattle-based Pioneer Newspapers and Swift Newspapers/Colorado Mountain News Media, which is based in Reno, Nev. Both newspapers are building new facilities to print multiple titles. Pioneer owns eight newspapers in the Pacific Northwest region, while Swift owns 21 newspapers in California, Colorado, Nevada and Oregon. |
