Southern newspapers to meet in Dallas

The annual Southern Newspaper Publishers Association conference and trade show will be held March 11-14 at the Hyatt Regency at Reunion in Dallas. More than 40 exhibitors from various publishing companies plan to attend the two-day trade show March 12-13.

The conference agenda includes several Letterpress Users Group meetings, and sessions on topics such as industry trends and directions, and experiences in web-width reduction.

The session titled "Gutenberg Workflow vs. Bill Gates Technology --What Does Your Newspaper Have" focuses on the tie between print reproduction quality and standards.

The panel consists of Kevin Conner, quality assurance manger of The Washington Post; Ann Hist, central region advertising manager for Dow Jones & Co.; Dennis Cheeseman, director of customer service at US Ink; and Robert Hacker, professor emeritus, Rochester Institute of Technology.

Also Clay Foster, director of operations for the Northeast Mississippi Journal, and Frank Bourlon, executive director of Newspaper Production & Research Center, will lead a discussion on recruitment, training and retention.

Several optional tours are available. At the US Ink manufacturers tour participants will see black and color manufacturing operations, product loading, delivery scheduling, and raw material handling.

The tour of the Dallas Morning News production center includes the platemaking, paper handling, press and distribution facilities, as well as the support departments of maintenance and technical services.

A tour of north Fort Worth, Texas, provided by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and a tour of their facility is also offered. A golf tournament at Bridlewood Golf Club is set for the last day of the conference.
