Newspapers and Technology March 2000 PeoplePrepressAltamira Group Inc. announced that Charles Mauzy has taken the position of vice president of business development. Most recently, Mauzy held the same title at Eye Wire Inc. Mauzy's role will be to initiate alliances to increase market share and awareness of the company's imaging products.
Anthony Ford is the new senior vice president and general manager of PrePress Solutions Inc. and will assume total responsibility as chief operating officer, Monotype Systems Inc. announced recently. Ford will coordinate the development and manufacturing direction of the company's e-commerce and Internet-related products, in addition to the Panther Products, Dennis Nierman, president of Monotype, stated. Monotype also announced the hiring of Osiel Martinez as a customer service engineer.
London Litho added John Nowicki to its executive management team. Nowicki has been named chief financial officer at the company's corporate headquarters in Lincolnwood, Ill. The company also selected Tony Rampolla as electronic imaging sales specialist. Paul Biorn has taken a position as digital technical service representative for K & F Printing Systems International. Previously, Biorn owned and operated Cenet Services Inc., supplying third-party maintenance for imagesetting and typesetting equipment installed at newspapers, publishers and commercial printers.
Agfa Corp. appointed Russell Spencer general manager of its electronic prepress products organization, headquartered in Wilmington, Mass. Most recently, Spencer led Agfa Graphic Systems' worldwide service organization. In his new role, he will be responsible for worldwide sales, manufacturing and marketing of electronic imaging products. Spencer has worked for Agfa since 1966.
Graphic Enterprises Inc. announced the promotion of Les Beyeler to executive vice president. Beyeler, who has been with the company for 25 years, will oversee the prepress and print-for-pay divisions. GEI also announced that Bob Behringer has assumed the role of president of the prepress division, and Mike Frank is the new vice president of sales for the prepress division. Frank has worked for GEI for 26 years. GEI's new vice president of operations for the prepress division is Mike Cowles. Cowles will oversee all prepress support, service and fulfillment issues. Kodak Polychrome Graphics announced the promotion of Jeffery Jacobson and Robert Nobile. Jacobson adopts the role of senior vice president at KPG and president of Kodak Polychrome Graphics Americas. Nobile will be senior vice president and chief financial officer of KPG.
Geac Publishing Systems, a division of Geac Computers Inc., appointed Philip Jordan product manager for its Cybergraphic editorial systems suite, Media Command. Jordan has 25 years of experience with editorial systems. He was most recently employed as the editorial systems manager of the Los Angeles Times. PressRock-Built, Pittsburgh-based manufacturer of printing press equipment, named McKay Mattingly regional director of sales. Prior to his post at Rock Built, Mattingly was executive vice president at B & L Service Inc., a ground transportation firm in Florida.
Steven R. Wilson joined Varn International as its president. Wilson assumes the role from Joseph and Vincent Von Zwehl, the company's previous owners and executives. The Von Zwehls will undertake director positions in the transition period that has followed the sale of Varn to Day International. New MediaEugene P. Conese Jr. accepted the role of chairman of the board for adDirect.Com. Conese is the chairman and chief executive officer of Aero Capital LLC, and was president and chief operating officer of Greenwich Air Services Inc.
The Internet business division of The New York Times, Times Co. Digital, announced the hiring of Craig V. Calder as vice president of marketing. Calder will oversee the development and execution of marketing strategies for TCD sites including nytimes.com, NYToday.com, and WineToday.com. Previously, Calder served as senior director of programming and marketing for Nickelodeon Online. IndustryThe Newspaper Association of America announced the promotion of Thomas Croteau to senior vice president of technology. NAA released the news at its Newspaper Operations SuperConference, held Jan. 23-28, in Miami Beach, Fla. In his new position, Croteau will be an industry spokesperson for telecommunications and technology issues relevant to newspaper production. Croteau joined NAA in 1993 as technical training manager, and in the fall of 1996 he was promoted to director of newspaper services. He was promoted again in July 1998 to vice president of newspaper services, where his responsibilities included the day-to-day operations of the technology department. He also supervised the activities of the newspaper services, environmental services, production materials and media technology divisions. Before joining NAA, Croteau worked for nine years at USA Today as production coordinator, production director and quality manager. He spent two years as a consultant and trainer with the Blevins Harding Group in Vienna, Va. Croteau holds a bachelor's degree from Rochester Institute of Technology in printing production management.
Dow Jones & Co. named Raymond Baumkirchner vice president of finance. Prior to this appointment, Baumkirchner was employed as a managing director of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Baumkirchner succeeds Thomas G. Hetzel, who assumes a senior-level position with one of Dow Jones' operating units.
Knight Ridder-owned Miami Herald Publishing Co., which publishes The Miami Herald, The Herald/Broward and El Nuevo Herald, named Wayne Markham publisher of The Florida Keys Keynoter. This role encompasses all Herald operations in Monroe County, including the Keynoter, the Tavernier-based Reporter newspaper, and Miami Herald circulation for Monroe County. Cesar E. Mendoza takes the title of circulation director, filling the post vacated by Markham. Mendoza will be responsible for distribution and sales in The Miami Herald's home market, Miami-Dade County, as well as The Herald's Newspaper-in-Education and subscriber retention programs in all markets. |
