Middle Georgia Printing Cooperative LLC has purchased an 18-unit Urbanite press from Impressions Worldwide that will anchor a new production facility in Macon.
MGPC now prints more than 25 weeklies on a doublewide Koenig & Bauer flexo press at a plant that formerly was used to print The Telegraph in Macon. McClatchy Co. in 2009 moved printing of the paper to a sister facility.
The Urbanite will give MGPC four webs of process color, two webs of black and can produce up to 48 broadsheet pages with up to 32 in color. The press can be split into two to run two products simultaneously. US Automation will equip the press with ultrasonic web detection and ink levelers to enhance productivity, IW said.
Josh Lurie, MGPC’s vice president, said the new plant “is giving us the opportunity to take our destiny in our own hands as we still see a bright future in print.”
The new plant is expected to be in operation by Jan. 1.
